Mason Greenwood's red card overturned following a significant mistake that led to the expulsion of the Manchester United loanee in a crucial LaLiga match.
The Spanish FA has overturned the red card given to Mason Greenwood. The Manchester United loanee received the dismissal during Getafe's 2-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday.
Referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez initially ejected Greenwood for dissent in the latter part of the game. Nevertheless, the ruling has since been reversed as it was established that the forward did not direct any comments towards the official. Rather, he was expressing his frustration regarding the frequency of fouls committed by the opposing players, a fact that has been verified. The RFEF, in a statement, clarified that the disciplinary body's role is not to re-officiate matches but to assess the referee's account for any glaring material errors, if applicable.
"As previously mentioned, only evidence of a mistake of this nature has the potential to skew the referee's assessment and, consequently, the accuracy of the recorded events.
The repeated scrutiny of the visuals, indeed, enabled this Committee to firmly establish, without any ambiguity, that the incident leading to the expulsion did not transpire as detailed by the referee and, ultimately, substantiate the evident error present in the referee's report.
These images reveal that the player indeed uttered the words "One, two, three, four, f***."
Greenwood was one of three Getafe players dismissed in their midweek defeat, alongside Juanmi Latasa and Damian Suarez."
He is currently liberated to participate in the upcoming La Liga match against Osasuna on January 21.
The 22-year-old was previously eligible for the Copa del Rey triumph against Espanyol last Saturday and commenced play for Jose Bordalas' squad.
Greenwood has notched five goals and contributed four assists across various competitions during his loan spell at Getafe this season.
