'Many club do not dare signing Greenwood during his emotional down time' Getafe boss explained the huge risk they take in signing Greenwood
Getafe boss Jos Bordalas has explained how they managed to sign Mason Greenwood admitting he took a huge risk on the Manchester forward amid his time of emotional downfall.
Getafe's manager, Bordalas, talked about signing Greenwood. He acknowledged the risk in the transfer, mentioning that most clubs were hesitant to sign the attacker. Getafe secured Greenwood on a season-long loan from United during the summer. This decision came after the Red Devils conducted an internal investigation following Greenwood's arrest on suspicion of sexual assault and domestic violence. However, all charges against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023.
What Jose Bordalas said regarding to Greenwood move:
In a special interview with Marca, Bordalas was questioned about how Getafe successfully secured the acquisition of Greenwood. He responded: "A friend called me to tell me about this possibility and at first we thought it wasn't real, but he confirmed that it was. There were conversations, he had other possibilities to play in Serie A, but there were many clubs that did not dare because of what had happened and so on. In the end, with a lot of effort and difficulty, we all managed to get him to come to Getafe."
Bordalas commented on comparisons between Greenwood and Bellingham,
stating, "We need to show some empathy towards Mason since it's challenging to endure the extended period he spent with minimal training. I've encountered instances of young players I've coached who quit the sport due to emotional issues, unable to return because disconnection leads to losing one's position, and recovery becomes arduous. It's truly commendable that, after such a prolonged period, he has rebounded and is contributing to our team."
Considering the bigger picture.
What lies ahead for Greenwood?
There are indications that Getafe might consider prolonging Greenwood's loan or securing his permanent stay in Spain. Prior to that, the forward aims to motivate his team to success against Rayo Vallecano on January 2, marking their initial match following the customary winter hiatus in Spanish football.
