What transpired?
Midfielder Casemiro, sidelined with a hamstring injury since November, and defender Martinez, recuperating from knee surgery last summer, have returned to first-team training – a development that brings joy to manager Erik Ten Hag.
ten Hag statement
Before the Monday night FA Cup clash against Wigan, he stated: “Two class players and they will bring the team forward. We know that and now we're looking forward to their return in the team on matchdays. But we have to wait for that. They still need some time to fully make their comeback but yeah, it is a good signal that they are back on the grass with the team, in the team training. Now, we have to make the next step [to get them] fully in the team training, and then they can work with us.”

Two important duo return back from injury
United has faced challenges this season, occupying the eighth position in the table and being eliminated from both the Champions League and Carabao Cup. Injuries to two crucial players from the 2022/23 season have further complicated their situation. Although Casemiro's performances have been less than impressive this term, raising questions about his future with the club, Martinez could potentially play a significant role in the latter part of the campaign.
WHAT'S NEXT?
United kick off their FA Cup journey facing League One team Wigan Athletic on Monday night in the third round of the competition. Following that, they welcome in-form Tottenham on January 14 as they resume Premier League proceedings.
