Manchester United requires squad strengthening in the upcoming January transfer window.
Manchester United has historically made astute signings during the January transfer window, securing key players like Bruno Fernandes in 2020, along with notable acquisitions such as Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic in 2006. However, the club has also experienced regrettable moves, with Alexis Sanchez (2018) standing out as one of their worst signings. Despite statements from Erik ten Hag and sporting director John Murtough downplaying January activity, the club, facing its worst start in almost a century, urgently needs rejuvenation. The recent confirmation of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS holding a 25% stake adds an extra incentive for Ten Hag to strengthen the squad and demonstrate his managerial prowess. As the January 1 transfer window approaches, United must consider potential recruits to address their pressing needs.
Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla)
United's attacking struggles this season highlight the pressing need for a reliable striker, with Anthony Martial's diminishing impact and imminent departure. While the young Rasmus Hojlund shows promise, he lacks the experience to carry the team's offensive burden. Youssef En-Nesyri emerges as an ideal candidate, recognized for his prowess in the air and clinical finishing. Having impressed against United in the Europa League, the 26-year-old Moroccan's track record at Sevilla, with 62 goals in four years, makes him a viable target, especially at a reported £20m ($25.5m).
Serhou Guirrassy (Stuttgart)
Guinea's Serhou Guirassy, akin to En-Nesyri and just slightly older at 27, consistently averages approximately 10 goals per season. Currently excelling, he has scored an impressive 17 Bundesliga goals, second only to Harry Kane. Last summer, Stuttgart secured Guirassy permanently from Rennes for about £8m ($10.2m) and might consider a lucrative deal if presented. However, a mid-season departure seems improbable as he has propelled Stuttgart to third in the Bundesliga, revitalizing their Champions League qualification hopes after a 15-year hiatus – unless, of course, United makes an irresistible offer.
Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna)
Another cost-effective forward is Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. The Dutch striker honed his skills for four years in Bayern Munich's academy, contributing with four Bundesliga goals during the 2019-20 season for the Bavarian giants.
Zirkzee's confidence has flourished through loan spells at Parma and Anderlecht, and now in his second season with Bologna, he has netted seven times in Serie A.
When Bayern Munich transferred him to Bologna in 2022, they safeguarded their investment with a £19m ($24m) buy-back clause. Acquiring him for around £25m could be an enticing option for United, helping alleviate the pressure on Hojlund. Additionally, it's well-known that Ten Hag has a penchant for signings with Dutch origins.
Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)
Manchester United faces a pressing need for a central-back due to frequent injuries, leading to multiple defensive partnerships. Jonny Evans, though reliable, isn't seen as a long-term solution. With Raphael Varane possibly leaving and Harry Maguire's contract situation, Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace emerges as an ideal target. Guehi, a young and accomplished defender, showcases leadership, maturity, and technical prowess. However, his acquisition may cost at least £50m ($64m), and negotiations are more likely in the summer given Crystal Palace's current situation in the relegation battle.
Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton)
Jarrad Branthwaite's success at Everton, acquired from lower league Carlisle in 2020, highlights the club's astute player development. After joining the Under-23 side, he gained valuable experience on loan at Blackburn Rovers and PSV Eindhoven. Despite Manchester United's attempted acquisition last August, Everton secured Branthwaite with a new contract in October, increasing his market value to around £100m ($128m). Pursuing talents like Branthwaite is crucial for United's resurgence, given his potential to become a future England star.
Edmond Tapsoba (Bayer Leverkusen)
