Manchester united women goalie Mary Earps together with lionesses team-mate Millie Bright and Lauren Hemp on new Year honours list after incredible 2023
The Earps secure another accolade,
The Lionesses' goalkeeper receives MBE alongside Hemp,
Chelsea captain Bright is honored with OBE.
What transpired?
Fresh off clinching this year's prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year accolade, the Lionesses' goalkeeper has been acknowledged for her contributions to football. She attains an MBE alongside England colleague Lauren Hemp, while fellow Lioness Millie Bright achieves an OBE for her noteworthy contributions.
Bright expressed her pride in eceiving the recognition: "I want to express my gratitude for being bestowed with this honor," stated Bright, who led the Lionesses in last summer's FIFA Women's World Cup, where they etched history by reaching their inaugural World Cup Final.
"This is a moment I will cherish with my loved ones eternally. I consider myself extremely fortunate, as many individuals could find themselves in my current position. It's remarkable to be acknowledged for my efforts in a sport that I passionately love and strive to excel in, while also contributing to the growth of the game for future generations. I dedicate this honor to my family for their sacrifices, enabling me to be where I am today, as well as to my coaches and teammates. Congratulations to my teammates on your honors too; I am immensely proud of you."
Following a notable period for Bright, the accolade represents a meaningful few days, following the Blues defender's revelation of her engagement to Levi Crew post a Christmas proposal. In the meantime, Earps is once again acknowledged not just for her role in the Lionesses' narrowly missed World Cup victory, where she successfully thwarted a penalty in the final against Spain, but also for confronting corporate behemoth Nike and shedding light on the commercial shortcomings of women's football. Her endeavors played a pivotal role in prompting a reversal in the sales strategy for her renowned World Cup jersey, which eventually sold out within minutes.
WHAT LIES AHEAD?
The trio of Lionesses remains on a deserved break, with the Women's Super League pausing during the winter period. Club football resumes on January 21, with Earps and United facing Bright's Chelsea, despite the defender being sidelined due to a knee injury. Hemp, on the other hand, will compete against Alisha Lehmann's Aston Villa with Manchester City on the same day.
