GAME BAN STRATEGY: Uncovering the Obscure Rule that Could Have Kept Andre Onana Off the Field for Man Utd, Despite Afcon Snub
Man Utd will have more than just their goalkeeper missing during the upcoming Afcon next month.
ANDRE ONANA has committed to participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, concerned that he might face allegations of letting his nation down. The Manchester United goalkeeper received a call-up to join Cameroon’s squad for the competition, spanning just over a month starting on January 13.
Onana faced a dilemma over his departure since it could result in missing six Red Devils matches during a period where his inconsistent performance raised concerns about his future with the team. However, FIFA regulations compelled him to join the national team upon receiving the call, or else he would face a ban from playing for United throughout the tournament. The decision came yesterday.
United officials had been engaged in talks with the Cameroon FA for an extended period, aiming for them to decide against summoning him.
Despite ongoing negotiations, Onana, after consulting with family and friends, recognized that he couldn't refuse the call from Cameroon.
Ajax goalkeeper Onana initially retired from international football in 2022 due to a dispute with coach Rigobert Song but returned in September for a crucial win over Burundi, securing a place in the Afcon finals. The 27-year-old is worried about the impact on his national team position if he remains sidelined at United, fearing that strong performances from Altay Bayindir could jeopardize his standing. Onana's spot has faced scrutiny following notable errors, resulting in 43 goals conceded in 27 appearances.
Sofyan Amrabat, currently on loan, won't be available for the United squad in the tournament as he has been summoned by Morocco. Nevertheless, United manager Erik ten Hag has received positive news with several players returning from injuries. Lisandro Martinez, a key player, is overcoming a metatarsal issue.
The centre-back said: “My rehab is going amazingly. I am feeling strong
Mason Mount is set to resume full training following a calf issue, and Casemiro (hamstring) is nearing a return. Defenders Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are expected to be ready for action next month.
